The White House wants a clear answer from the Kremlin on the peace plan agreed with Kiev, writes Axios.
Presidents Donald Trump's Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner met with Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Paris on Wednesday and discussed proposals with him, almost all aspects of which have been agreed to with Ukraine, a person with knowledge of the matter told the publication.
Putin has so far shown no interest not only in concluding a peace deal, but also in seriously discussing the terms of a cessation of hostilities. He continues to launch massive strikes on Ukrainian cities. On Friday night, his army, according to the AFU Air Force, launched a medium-range ballistic missile at the Lviv region from the Kapustin Yar training range in the Astrakhan region, where Oreshnik missile systems are based.
French newspaper Le Monde reported Wednesday that Dmitriev was spotted outside the U.S. Embassy in Paris. Whitkoff and Kushner briefed him on the provisions of the peace plan after holding talks the previous day for two days with Ukrainian and European representatives, including Vladimir Zelensky and the leaders of Britain, Germany and France, Axios wrote.
After those talks, Zelensky said the U.S. informed him that it would discuss the agreed proposals with Russia. The latest round of U.S.-Ukrainian-European discussions involved addressing two major contentious issues. They concern security guarantees for Ukraine and its possible territorial concessions in Donbass.
As such guarantees from the coalition of the willing, Britain and France have prepared to send 7,500 troops each to Ukraine to monitor compliance with the peace deal, The Times reported, citing two British sources. As for the US guarantees, they were not spelled out in the coalition's statement. Zelensky, however, said Thursday that the relevant agreement between Ukraine and the United States was "essentially ready for final approval at the highest level" with Trump.
