The Voyevoda Project 23700 vessel received by Russian rescuers may have a dual purpose. This is reported by The War Zone.
Despite the fact that the Voyevoda was transferred to the Maritime Rescue Service, there are claims in Russia itself that it could serve as a "presidential vessel."
In some circles it is directly called "Putin's yacht," although there are obvious questions about the realism of such an assumption.
First of all, attention is drawn to the size of the vessel. It is known that "Voevoda" has a displacement of 7500 tons, length of 111 m and width of 24 m. The ship has a speed of 22 knots and a range of 5,000 miles. Its large size allows it to accommodate four small boats and two helicopters.
Officially, the Voyevoda is designed to conduct and support a wide range of maritime rescue operations, including those outside the Baltic Sea. The vessel can transport, deploy and deliver search and rescue equipment, including small boats.
Specialists have noted that the vessel is "suspiciously well" equipped in terms of crew accommodation.
It has been given various amenities, including eight accommodation units with bedrooms, bathrooms and offices, a conference room and a passenger cabin with a buffet. Such things are typically seen on large ocean-going vessels.
Even during construction, questions began to arise about the ship's actual role.
In 2017, sources in the shipbuilding industry expressed doubts that the vessel would be used for salvage operations. They suggested that it was likely a "special dual-purpose vessel" or a "yacht for dignitaries".
"The architecture of this vessel and the described functionality are more reminiscent of the now popular type of expedition yachts. However, the design is very utilitarian and does not correspond to a full-fledged yacht for a private client, but perhaps this is done intentionally," said Alexander Bogdashevsky, who is the director of the yacht-building company.
According to him, there is every reason to believe that the true purpose of the vessel does not correspond to the stated goals, and that it will be used for the specific needs of very high-ranking officials of the Russian Federation.
Other notable features of the Voyevoda include its elegant blue and white hull coloring, which contrasts with the rest of the Russian Maritime Rescue Service fleet.
If the Voyevoda is indeed to be used as a presidential yacht, it must have additional features. This includes a sophisticated communications system and a powerful self-defense suite. This is especially important given the growing threat from various types of drones.
