Power must shift to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the people.

Britain has publicly supported a peaceful and democratic transition of power in Venezuela to a legitimate government reflecting the will of the people, following reports of the fall of the Nicolas Maduro regime.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Prime Minister Keir Starmer's publication on the X network.

London's position on the events in Venezuela

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed that London has long advocated a transfer of power in Venezuela and has not recognized Maduro as a legitimate president.

He said that in the coming days, the UK government will discuss developments with its US partners, seeking a "safe and peaceful transfer of power to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people."

Starmer said, "The UK has long supported the transfer of power in Venezuela. We regarded Maduro as an illegitimate president and we shed no tears over the end of his regime. This morning I have reaffirmed my support for international law. The UK government will discuss developments with US counterparts in the coming days as we seek a safe and peaceful transfer of power to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people."

The significance of Starmer's statements for Venezuela

London's support reflects the UK's desire for stability in the region and emphasizes the need to respect international law in the change of power.

The UK intends to coordinate closely with the US and other partners to ensure a safe and transparent transition of power in Venezuela, ensuring that the new government is legitimate and representative of the country's people.
