The Trump Administration Said They Were Aware Of The Caracas Bombings

A U.S. military spokeswoman in Washington confirmed the information.

Officials in the Donald Trump administration say they are aware of explosions in Venezuela's capital Caracas, but are not yet providing details.

It was reported by CBS News.

At around 2 a.m. local time Saturday, at least seven explosions were heard in Venezuela's capital Caracas, and a low-altitude plane flew over. Residents from different neighborhoods ran into the streets. Some could be seen from a distance from different neighborhoods in Caracas.

Sources told CBS News that Trump administration officials were aware of the reports of explosions and planes, but the White House did not respond to requests for comment and the Venezuelan government gave no immediate reaction.

A U.S. military spokeswoman in Washington, quoted by the New York Times, confirmed reports of explosions in Caracas but did not comment on possible U.S. involvement in the events.

The president of neighboring Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said in a social media post that someone was "bombing Caracas at this moment," without specifying who.

"A warning to the whole world: they attacked Venezuela with a missile strike," he said, calling for a meeting of the United Nations.

The reports of the bombings came after the U.S. military conducted operations for months against ships believed to be smuggling drugs in the region and the Trump administration pressured Venezuela's ruler, Nicolas Maduro. Thousands of U.S. troops and several warships have been sent to the region, and President Trump has hinted for weeks at a possible larger military operation.
