The US president reminded Tehran of Maduro's fate.
US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that "time is running out" to reach an agreement that could prevent possible military action by Washington. He made the statement in a post on the social network Truth Social amid the US military build-up in the region, writes Financial Times (translated by Charter97.org).
Trump said a large naval force led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is moving toward Iran, which he compared to the US operation in Venezuela to capture dictator Nicolas Maduro. He said the navy was ready "to carry out its mission quickly and decisively, with force if necessary."
The U.S. leader insists that talks with Tehran must include a commitment to a complete renunciation of nuclear weapons. "I hope Iran will quickly sit down at the negotiating table and agree on a fair deal - WITHOUT nuclear weapons - that is beneficial to all sides," he stressed, adding that if there is no agreement, the next attack will prove far more serious.
This rhetoric comes amid escalating tensions after the US stepped up its military presence in the Persian Gulf earlier in January. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says Tehran has not requested the latest talks and is not in direct contact with the U.S. over the threats, although consultations through mediators continue.
Iran officially says its nuclear program is peaceful and rejects demands that it halt uranium enrichment. President Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at preventing war, emphasizing commitment to international law.
