Since the 1979 revolution.
U.S. President Donald Trump has received multiple reports from U.S. intelligence that the regime in Iran is in its weakest position since the 1979 revolution.
According to The New York Times, citing sources.
According to U.S. intelligence reports, protests that erupted late last year have shaken some elements of the Iranian government. The demonstrations have spread to parts of the country that officials believe were strongholds of support for Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Although the protests have been quelled, the Iranian regime remains in a quandary. U.S. intelligence reports have repeatedly emphasized that Iran's economy is weak.
Economic hardship is what triggered the mass protests in late December. Iranian officials have resorted to harsh repression, further alienating large segments of the population from supporting the government.
The US military is now building up its forces in the region, but it is unclear what steps the Donald Trump administration may be considering.
As of Monday, January 26, the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, escorted by three warships equipped with Tomahawk missiles, had entered the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility in the western Indian Ocean. According to the military, if the White House orders a strike on Iran, the aircraft carrier would be capable of attacking the country within a day or two.
The US president has previously warned that he may strike Iran because of the government's intensifying crackdown on protesters. However, his advisers are divided over the merits of strikes, especially when it comes to "symbolic" attacks on government elements involved in the crackdown.
