Because of the snow and the cold.

Winter storm "Fern" has caused the cancellation of about 13 thousand flights in the United States from January 24th to January 26th. This is reported by Bloomberg.

This was the biggest disruption in air transportation in the country since the shutdown last year. CBS News says it's the highest number of cancelations in a single day since the COVID pandemic began in March 2020.

Authorities in 18 states have declared a state of emergency due to the snow and freezing weather. In total, the storm affected 180 million to 220 million people, the agency notes.

Forecasters from the US Weather Prediction Center expect 20-40 cm of snow in New York. More than 130,000 homes were left without electricity, mostly in Texas and Louisiana.

U.S. President Donald Trump called the storm historic on social network Truth Social. He approved a federal emergency declaration in the states of South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana and West Virginia. He urged citizens to "stay safe and warm."
