In favor of a trade agreement with China.
The U.S. will impose duties of 100% on all exports from Canada if Ottawa enters into a trade agreement with China, President Donald Trump has announced. "If Canada makes a deal with China, all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S. will immediately be subject to a 100% customs tariff," he wrote in Truth Social.
The U.S. president also warned Canada in stark terms about the potential consequences of an agreement with the PRC: "China will eat Canada alive, completely engulf Canada, including the destruction of business, social structure and way of life in general." Trump made the statement after Beijing and Ottawa reached an agreement last week to lower trade barriers and restore ties.
In a recent visit to China, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the Middle Kingdom a "reliable and predictable partner," and on the margins of the Davos economic forum, he urged European leaders to attract investment from the country, the world's second-largest economy.
Trump suggested that China would try to use Canada to circumvent U.S. duties. "If Governor Carney (Trump so alludes to Canada being the "51st state" of the U.S. under his control. - TMT) thinks he can turn Canada into a 'transshipment point' for China to ship goods and products to the United States, he is sorely mistaken," the US president wrote.
The current US duty on Canadian goods not listed as exempt under the USMCA trade agreement is 35%, with different rates for certain industries such as steel and aluminum.
