However, many of the leaders invited to the council do not plan to participate.
U.S. President Donald Trump wants to stage a ceremony to sign the text of the charter and credentials of a "Peace Council" on Gaza at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Jan. 22, Bloomberg sources familiar with the matter said. Prior to that, Associated Press sources said a formal announcement of the council's composition was expected at the forum, but did not specify a date.
But "some elements in the fine print" made those invited to the council wonder whether they should agree to it, Bloomberg wrote.
French President Emmanuel Macron has no plans to join the council, a source close to the French leader told Bloomberg. He said Macron believes the organization's goal goes beyond the Gaza Strip and raises serious concerns "especially with regard to respecting the principles and institutional framework of the United Nations, which France considers non-negotiable."
Before that, Bloomberg reported that along with an invitation to the council from Trump, heads of state receive a charter from Trump that spells out the organization's goal of "promoting stability, restoring credible and legitimate governance and ensuring sustainable peace in areas affected by or at the The Financial Times wrote that the text of the charter does not mention Gaza, but emphasizes the need for "a more flexible and effective international body to build peace." This suggests that the scope of the "Peace Council" will be much broader and that the body could be "used as a rival to the UN," the FT noted.
In addition to becoming a permanent member of the council, countries must pay a $1 billion contribution, the money to be used for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, the charter says. Without paying the fee, membership in the new body will be temporary - three years.
