Clashes between protesters and regime forces are gaining momentum.

A new wave of protests continues in Iran for the fifth day in a row due to the sharp deterioration of the country's economy, the fall of the rial and the corresponding rise in the cost of living. According to the latest reports, the protests have spread to Kermanshah, Isfahan, Arak, Sabzevar, Hamadan Karaju and other provinces, with crowds chanting anti-government slogans and confronting security forces. According to separate claims by the country's authorities and human rights activists, at least nine people at these protests have been killed and several dozen injured, writes OBOZ.UA.

Six protesters were killed in an attack on a police station in the city of Kahderijan in Isfahan province. The death of a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is also known - the IRGC, along with security forces, is trying to counter the protests.

What Khamenei says

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has accused enemies of Islam of fomenting the unrest. He also said he would address the nation about the events "when the time comes for it."

"In recent days, Iran's enemies have used various tools, including money, weapons, politics and the intelligence apparatus, to create problems for our Islamic republic," the ayatollah said.

What preceded

Reminder that protests erupted in Iran over the sharp fall of the rial and soaring prices. The first to demonstrate were trade workers - traders in bazaars, shopkeepers and the like. They were later joined by university students and young people in general.

"The clashes between protesters and security forces mark a significant escalation in the unrest that has spread across the country since traders began protesting against the government's handling of the sharp fall in the currency and rapid price rises," noted Australian broadcaster SBS.

What's happening now

Official figures from Tehran show that more than 450 people have been arrested in the Iranian capital alone during the unrest in recent days.

The Iranian Intelligence Ministry said several "instigators of the protests" have already been identified "and serious action will be taken against them soon."

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also urged the public to report any "inciting elements."
