European Council President Calls Emergency Meeting Over Trump Ultimatums
- 19.01.2026, 16:03
It will take place at 21:00 Minsk time.
President of the European Council António Costa convenes a special meeting on transatlantic relations. This was announced to journalists on Monday, January 19, by Costa's spokeswoman, writes "Suspilne".
The meeting will be held on January 22 at 19:00 Brussels time (21:00 Minsk time).
The main reason for the urgent meeting was US President Donald Trump's ultimatums, probably regarding Denmark and Greenland.
On January 17, after repeated threats to invade Greenland, Trump announced duties on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Finland in response to Europe's support for Danish sovereignty and the sending of European military personnel to the Arctic island.
The eight countries issued a joint statement and said the imposition of duties would "undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous spiral of deterioration."
