Many of the records broken date back to 1987.
17 local temperature records were broken at Belarusian weather stations during the week of frosty weather, according to the analysis of operational and archival data of Belgidromet conducted by "Pozirkam". The relative majority of the rewritten minimums - 6 - date back to 1987.
In the night of January 17, five minimums were updated: in Klichev (26.6 vs. 25.3 in 2021), Berezino (25.1 vs. 22.5 in 1987), Orsha (24.5 vs. 22.1 at the same time), Lelchitsy (24.3 vs. 23.5 at the same time) and Mstislavl (23.8 vs. 19.6 in 2021). The record was repeated in the Berezinski Reserve (24 degrees of frost in 1987).
In the next three days, Belhydromet predicts the preservation of very cold weather. At night, up to 27-28 degrees below zero is expected in some areas. Nevertheless, it's much higher than the historical minimums across the country. For example, the record for January 17 is 41 degrees of frost. Such a temperature was recorded in 1940 in Borisov. The current records are due to the lack of either archival data or weather stations themselves.
