Washington could take action against those responsible for violence against protesters.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has asked European countries for intelligence on targets inside Iran
This is reported by The Washington Post.
The publication's sources among European officials say that Trump administration officials asked their countries on January 12 to share intelligence on possible targets inside Iran.
One of the European officials noted that Washington is unlikely to strike nuclear facilities, but could take action against leaders of organizations responsible for violence at protests in Iran.
At the same time, Politico's sources said, the U.S.'s ability to force Iran is significantly limited.
As the publication notes, U.S. warships and personnel that were once at the disposal of the U.S. presidential administration in the Middle East have been redeployed to the Caribbean.
"The president can still order an air strike against Iran's leadership or military facilities, but his choices are significantly reduced even compared to last June, when the U.S. struck Iranian nuclear facilities," Politico writes.
In addition, the publication notes, the Trump administration will have to coordinate plans for the possible use of force with Congress, which also limits its options.
