About 15,000 nurses took to the streets demanding higher wages.
A large-scale protest action has unfolded in New York City, with about 15,000 nurses taking part. The strike is the largest in the city's history and has several key demands: wage increases that take into account the current inflation rate, maintaining and expanding measures to combat staff shortages, and adding clauses to labor contracts that protect nurses from violence in the workplace, according to Politico.
The strike, the result of lengthy and inconclusive negotiations, surpassed the previous protest, which took place in New York City. Hospital officials insist the demands are unrealistic and have expressed concerns about potential cuts in federal financial support.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has taken action to mobilize additional resources to maintain patient safety. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani assured the public of a commitment to ensure uninterrupted access to medical care for all those in need.
Hospitals, in turn, were forced to resort to temporary staffing. The union representing the nurses accuses the management of medical institutions of unwillingness to seek compromise and conduct constructive negotiations.
