At the same time, Maia Sandu called Chisinau's EU membership a more realistic goal.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu in podcast The Rest Is Politics: Leading admitted that in a potential referendum she would vote for the country's unification with Romania.

"If we held a referendum, I would vote for unification with Romania," Sandu said.

She explained her position by the geopolitical situation around Moldova and in the world as a whole. According to her, a country like Moldova "is finding it increasingly difficult to survive, to exist as a democracy and a sovereign state."

At the same time, Sandu emphasized that today there is no majority in the republic that would support unification with Romania. The president called Chisinau's membership in the EU a more realistic goal, and it helps "to defend sovereignty."

Before that, Romanian President Nicusor Dan said he wants unification with Moldova, but fully respects the will of the neighboring republic's citizens. Dan said that at the moment about 35% of Moldovan citizens support the idea of uniting the two countries.

"As long as a significant part of the neighboring country's population supports the current form of the state, Romania will not take any steps," the Romanian leader concluded.
