The authorities suspect the RF of lying.
Cyprus has been rocked by a scandalous video from the X network that shows alleged illegal schemes in the financing of President Nikos Christodoulides's 2023 election campaign. Authorities reject the veracity of the video and say there is a likely Russian Federation trail.
According to Ekathimerini.
Cypriot authorities investigating the controversial video believe the footage shows characteristics of an organized hybrid operation aimed at directly harming the Republic of Cyprus.
"According to security sources, the activity bears similarities to organized Russian disinformation campaigns that have previously targeted EU member states. While Russia is considered a likely source, authorities do not rule out the possibility that the operation was launched from another location using similar methods," the publication writes.
The piece also says that investigators noted the timing of the video's publication - it appeared shortly after Cyprus began governing the EU Council - from January 1, 2026. Therefore, the malicious actions could be triggered by that event, law enforcers said.
The investigation also claims that the publication shows signs of Russia's "Dvoinik" campaign - a coordinated online disinformation effort that has been underway since 2021 and is known to target countries such as France, the United States, Germany and Israel.
"Analysis of the material shows that the editing and dubbing of the video was designed to reinforce a specific narrative related to corruption, with the apparent aim of undermining the credibility and reputation of individuals and institutions," Ekathimerini wrote.
Cyprus Scandal
A scandal has erupted in Cyprus following the publication of a video allegedly showing illegal funding for President Nicos Christodoulidis' 2023 election campaign.
Authorities have called the recording edited and a possible element of a disinformation operation, with the opposition demanding an investigation. The president himself rejected the accusations and called for any evidence to be handed over to law enforcers.
It should be noted that on January 1, Cyprus began its presidency of the Council of the EU.
