Russia Faces A Gas Shortage

  • 4.09.2025, 22:06

This was stated by Putin.

With the world's largest proven gas reserves of more than 60 trillion cubic meters, Russia may face a gas shortage. Putin said this at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

"We are going to face a gas deficit," Putin said at the presentation of the results of the development of the regions of the Far Eastern Federal District. He added that there are other issues that require "special attention." "We have no connections between the various components of the energy infrastructure, we need to develop the grid facilities," the Russian ruler listed.

In connection with a possible gas shortage, Putin suggested switching to coal, whose reserves, he said, "will be enough for almost a thousand years." "All coal reserves will suffice for 900 years, which, of course, can be used much more efficiently, with greater efficiency and in compliance with all environmental requirements," TASS quoted the Russian dictator as saying.

According to the Russian Energy Ministry, Russia currently possesses 63.4 trillion cubic meters of gas reserves, which should be enough for 100 years of production, draws the attention of The Moscow Times.

The Audit Chamber in 2020 estimated Russian reserves at 20% of the world's reserves, but warned that they would only be enough for 50 years. At the same time, high-quality reserves of "dry gas" (i.e., almost pure methane") are "significantly lower than the total," the SP wrote.

Russian gas production has been declining since the outbreak of war with Ukraine, which cut Gazprom off from a key, European market.
