Sweden Has Reopened The Debate On Building Its Own Atomic Bomb

In the middle of the last century, Stockholm was testing nuclear weapons.
Sweden has reopened the debate on nuclear weapons after the publication of a series of articles in the local media. Politicians and experts are arguing about whether the country should build its own arsenal or participate in a pan-European program.
In Swedish Lapland, near the village of Nausta, there is Lake Foajauré. It was formed by one of the most powerful explosions carried out in the country in the 1950s as part of a secret defense program, writes The Times.
It was originally a crater from a blast that simulated a small nuclear explosion in preparation for a national atomic weapon.
Today, as the Russian threat grows, and amid what many feel is a decline in the reliability of the United States, politicians are debating whether they need their own bomb.
The first to raise the topic was Jimmy Akesson, leader of the Sweden Democrats. He said, "Sweden had a lot of expertise in nuclear technology. But the political will was different. I think everything should be on the table now."
The idea was supported by researcher Robert Dalse of FOA, as well as MEP Alice Theodorescu Mave of the Christian Democrats, who proposed Swedish participation in a pan-European nuclear strategy.
