The U.S. Secret Service will now be responsible for securing the event.
U.S. President Donald Trump made a near last-minute decision to attend a meeting of the country's top generals in Quantico, Virginia, which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had ordered to be held last week. This is reported by The Washington Post, citing a planning document.
It is noted that Trump's appearance at the meeting could overshadow Hegseth's plans, as well as add more challenges in organizing security for the large-scale event. The U.S. Secret Service will now be responsible for securing the event.
The publication recalled that Hegseth last week ordered hundreds of top Army generals and admirals with ranks of one star and above, as well as senior enlisted men and women, to arrive at Quantico on Sept. 30 to hear him speak about military standards and his vision of "military ethics." The event was expected to last less than an hour, but Trump's visit could change that schedule.
Experts estimate that the flight, lodging and transportation costs for all military leaders, some of whom will come from the Middle East, Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, will run into the millions of dollars, the publication added.
