This is in response to the drone incursions in Denmark.
NATO has announced it is strengthening its Baltic Guardian mission in response to new incursions by unidentified drones into Danish airspace. In a statement emailed to Reuters, the alliance said additional intelligence, surveillance and at least one air defense frigate were deployed.
Danish police said the drones were spotted near the country's military installations on Saturday night. Earlier this week, unidentified drones repeatedly violated airspace over airports and critical infrastructure. On Monday, Copenhagen airport, the largest in Northern Europe, was closed for several hours due to their appearance. Five other airports, including military airports, temporarily suspended operations in the following days.
NATO did not specify which countries would provide the new forces. The alliance said their aim was to strengthen surveillance in the Baltic Sea region and protect critical infrastructure.
Operation Baltic Guardian began in January 2025 after a series of incidents where communication cables and gas pipelines were damaged at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The mission already involves frigates, patrol aviation and unmanned systems to protect maritime communications.
