Local elections will be held in India in November.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a payment of more than $845 million to women in Bihar state ahead of local elections in November. This was reported by Bloomberg.

Modi said 7.5 million women in the state will be paid 10,000 rupees ($112.74) each.

"This program will benefit one woman in every family," Modi added.

The publication noted that the prime minister, along with his Bharatiya Janata Party, has announced similar initiatives over the past few years to build public support in several states where elections have been held.

According to analysts, "the millions of dollars transferred to women through such payments were a major reason for their electoral victories in some regions."

Bloomberg says electoral success in Bihar could help Modi revive a staggered economic program. It could also ease pressure on India's government, which has been criticized by the opposition for failing to persuade Washington to lift export duties.
