What's the reason.
According to calculations of the Ministry of Agriculture of Germany, in 2025 in Germany will be harvested 13.4 million tons of potatoes - this is 5.3% more than last season, and 17% higher than the average indicator of previous years. The last time comparable volumes were harvested in 2000, writes "Deutsche Welle".
With this background, potato prices have fallen significantly: in August in German supermarkets, they cost 15% cheaper than in 2024. Cheapened and young potatoes. At the same time, German farmers received about a third less for the new crop than last year.
In Belarus, the situation has been the opposite in recent years. In the spring of 2025, due to the introduced price control, the country faced potato shortage for the first time. During the year, it was actively exported to Russia, where it was sold much more expensive, while the Belarusians themselves were forced to buy imported potatoes. According to the National Statistics Committee, its price has increased by 127% since the beginning of 2025. At the same time, the area under potatoes in Belarus has decreased more than three times over the past 20 years - from 467 thousand hectares in 2005 to 141 thousand in 2024.
Germany is currently considered one of the largest potato producers in the world. Like Belarusians, the residents of Germany consume quite a lot of potatoes: in 2023-2024 each resident ate about 63.5 kg per year. Of these, 38 kg are in the form of French fries, potato salad or chips.
