For Belarusians.

Deputy Chairman of the Seimas Committee on National Security and Defense Laurynas Kasciunas has proposed to make the requirements for knowledge of the Lithuanian language for immigrants from third countries stricter.

The Lithuanian Seimas has approved amendments to the law providing for this. The amendments were supported by 85 parliamentarians, with 3 abstentions, writes Delfi.lt.

It is proposed to establish a requirement to learn Lithuanian language for foreigners who have lived in Lithuania for 5 years and wish to extend a temporary residence permit.

The level of language proficiency will be determined by the government, and the Migration Department will be granted the right to check the foreigner's knowledge of the state language and the basics of the Constitution (in case of issuing or replacing a temporary residence permit).
