Zelensky Told The UN About A New Security Architecture

The Budapest Memorandum failed.

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky has stated the failure of the Budapest Memorandum. The guarantees spelled out in it turned out to be empty words without any real content.

Bearing this in mind, Ukraine has undertaken to build a new security architecture. The head of Ukraine announced this during his speech at the high-level meeting of the UN Security Council.

In his speech at the UN Security Council meeting, the Ukrainian president stated the failure of the Budapest Memorandum.

"The Budapest Memorandum, designed to guarantee Ukraine's security in exchange for giving up nuclear weapons, has failed. It proved that international promises can turn into empty words," Zelensky said.

The head of Ukraine added that now a new security architecture is being formed with Ukraine's participation.

"That is why today, together with Great Britain, France and already more than 30 countries in our coalition of the willing, we are building a new security architecture. We count on the reliable support of the United States. Real security guarantees must become a border that Russia will not be able to cross again," the Ukrainian president emphasized.

He added that with joint efforts the world is able to force Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to stop the war.

"Here is one example of how war can be stopped by force: if we can strengthen our airspace with a joint system of countering Russian missiles and drones, it will force Russia to stop its air attacks, because everything can be shot down. And then Putin will be forced to sit here or on some other respectable platform and seek a truce on the ground. If there is no war in the skies, Russia cannot continue to fight on the ground. I have talked about this with President Trump and other leaders," Zelensky emphasized.

He said that under the circumstances when one of the permanent members of the Security Council has become an aggressor, the rest of the Council must stop him.

"You - the United States, China, Britain, France, the permanent members of the Security Council - represent a key world force, a force that must act when international law fails to do so. And no, not Russia. With this war, Russia has discredited itself: even those who are not yet openly criticizing Putin still feel that Russia's presence does not bring anything good," the Ukrainian president said.
