He will become an assistant to the head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov.

Colonel General Alexander Lapin, former commander of the Russian Army's Center and North groups, was dismissed from the troops in August 2025. This was reported by the Russian RBC, citing its sources.

At the same time, Tatar-Inform said that the occupant will now become an aide to the head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. According to the sources, he will deal with "military issues and work with veterans" in the administration of the head of the republic.

The post of commander of the "Leningrad Military District" is now occupied by Colonel-General Evgeny Nikiforov.

What is known about Alexander Lapin

It is known that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the invader was the head of the group of troops "Center", which reached the outskirts of Kiev, but after the defeat it was transferred to the east of Ukraine. In this direction, the group occupied Liman in the Donetsk region, and then Severodonetsk and Lisichansk in the Lugansk region.

Already after the retreat of the Russian occupiers from Liman, Lapin was criticized by the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov. Then he called the general "a talentless man who is being covered up by the leaders in the General Staff at the top."

Lapin was subsequently fired, and in January 2023 he was appointed chief of the General Staff of the Ground Forces. In March last year, the general became head of the Leningrad Military District and the North grouping, which was formed on its basis. This grouping was then responsible for the Kharkov and Kursk directions.

The Wall Street Journal also called Lapin responsible for Russia's defense problems in the Kursk region. According to the journalists, the general had a shortage of people, but such a mistake is typical for the Russian top leadership, which is usually unaware of the realities of the front.
