The Estonian Armed Forces emphasized that the Russians had not made contact.
On September 19, three Russian MiG-31s violated Estonian airspace. The Estonian Armed Forces stressed that the Russians did not have permission for the flight and did not make contact.
"The map shows the flight path of three Russian MiG-31 aircraft that violated Estonian airspace near the island of Vaindloo on September 19," the press service noted on X on Sept. 20.
Three Russian MiG-31 aircraft remained there for about 12 minutes, according to the Estonian armed forces. The airspace violation took place between 9:58 and 10:10 a.m. local time. The Russians did not have flight authorization and did not maintain two-way radio contact. They did not provide a flight plan and the aircraft did not have a transponder turned on.
"NATO F-35 aircraft patrolling Baltic airspace responded. This is the fourth violation of airspace by Russia this year," the Estonian Armed Forces added.
We recall that the Swedish Armed Forces released photos of Russian MiG planes that violated Estonian airspace on September 19. They were reportedly armed with R-73 air-to-air missiles. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Mihal called the incident unacceptable.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the MiG-31 fighters allegedly "made a routine flight" without violating the borders of other countries. The press service assured that the route was over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea.
