ChatGPT Introduces Parental Controls

It will let parents know if the child is upset.

OpenAI has announced new protections for vulnerable users, including parental controls on ChatGPT that will notify parents if their child is stressed or in a dangerous situation, writes Forbes magazine (translated by Charter97.org).

The innovations were announced following a lawsuit filed by the parents of 16-year-old Adam Rain, who took his own life in April. The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT contributed to the teen's psychological addiction and provided instructions on how to commit suicide.

Parental controls will allow children's accounts to be linked to adult accounts and control access to features including bot memory and chat history. ChatGPT will send notifications to parents when a "moment of acute stress" is detected in a teen. It will also include "age-appropriate model behavior rules" for teens.

In addition, the company plans to automatically redirect "sensitive" requests to special models with deeper analysis, which OpenAI claims better adhere to security rules and provide more useful answers. ChatGPT will also make it easier to access emergency services and professional help.

OpenAI has created a council of experts in youth development, mental health, and human-computer interaction to develop future safeguards. The council works in conjunction with a global network of more than 250 clinicians involved in researching model behavior in the context of mental health.

The company is also expanding its team of experts in eating disorders, addiction, and adolescent health. OpenAI hopes these safety measures will reduce risks to young users. The innovations will become available within the next month.
