"How Much Of The Population Will Remain In Belarus?"

How the authorities fight for beautiful numbers in statistics.

A reader of the site Charter97.org told why it is almost impossible for those who left Belarus to sell real estate:

- My family has been in forced emigration for the third year. In Minsk we still have an apartment, in which we managed to live a little more than a year. We used to rent it out. But after our tenants moved out, we decided that sitting and waiting to see what would happen was not an option. After all, life goes on, and we must also move on.

We began to think how we could sell this "suitcase without a handle", because we seem to have a place to live, but we are squatting in other people's corners and paying much more for rent than we get in Minsk.

We turned to a realtor, who once helped us with the purchase of this apartment. However, the agent immediately said that it is impossible to sell an apartment like ours. We postponed this issue for a year and let the tenants in again.

Not long ago we turned to another realtor and heard the following answer: today it is virtually impossible to discharge through the court. Because this issue lies not in the legal plane, but in the political.

My husband and I began to discuss the situation and came to the conclusion: people are being squeezed out of the country further, but on paper they want to keep the beautiful numbers registered. After all, if all those who want to be discharged, how many people will remain in Belarus?

How then to explain to the people that for 30 years of the dictator's rule Belarusians from 10 million remained hardly 8 million? Probably, they bought houses on the seashore from the good life and enjoy their Dolce vita....
