In mid-August 2025, the final decision was made.
According to BELPOL several independent sources, the regime has decided to build a disposal facility for class 3 and 4 radioactive waste in Belarus.
This is medium- and low-level waste - filters, ion-exchange resins, contaminated materials, overalls, tools. They require shielding and special storage conditions, but they are not the same as high-activity spent fuel.
We first learned about such plans a year and a half ago. Two sites were considered: Klimovichi district of Mogilev voblast (near the border with Russia) and Astravets district - near Astravets NPP.
In mid-August 2025, the final decision was made: the storage facility will be located near Astravets NPP, just 22 kilometers from the border with Lithuania, said BELPOL.
According to available information, the project is planned to allocate Br941 million, with commissioning scheduled for 2030. The realization will be undertaken by the state enterprise BelRAO.
