Bloomberg: EU Decides To Accelerate The Rejection Of Russian LNG

Details.

The European Union intends to accelerate the phase-out of Russian liquefied natural gas. The European Commission is considering including a provision in a new package of sanctions against Russia to phase out LNG imports earlier than the end of 2027, writes Bloomberg.

The EU is considering ending Russian LNG imports by amending its RePowerEU supply recovery plan, the agency's sources said.

"Ever since we presented the RePowerEU plan in 2022, we have been saying that it is better to give up Russian energy sooner than later," said European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen.

Many EU countries are "reluctant to impose duties" on India and China, so the European Commission has focused on Russian LNG, Bloomberg notes.

In May, the European Commission unveiled a plan to phase out Russian energy by 2027.
