Poland's foreign minister hopes Beijing will help ease migration pressure on the Polish border.
Poland hopes to enlist China's support for diplomatic pressure on Minsk and Moscow to ease the flow of illegal migrants to Europe. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Bloomberg ahead of a meeting with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
"This is a very important topic and if he doesn't raise it, I will. If we want the border to be fully open, there must be peace on both sides," Sikorski said.
Sikorski said Poland has spent half a billion euros over the past four years building a fence along its 400-kilometer border with Belarus because of the number of migrants on the border.
In addition, Poland closed its border with Belarus indefinitely in September amid joint Russian and Belarusian strategic exercises Zapad-2025, which will last until September 16.
On September 15, Sikorski holds talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who has arrived in Poland. This is the first visit by a Chinese foreign minister to Poland in six years.
The talks take place at the Representative Center of the Ministry of National Defense in Helenów near Warsaw. Wang Yi plans to visit three European countries in total, besides Poland, Austria and Slovenia.
