The number of Bundeswehr fighter jets patrolling the skies over Poland will be doubled.

Reacting to the incursion of Russian drones into Poland, the German government has decided to extend and expand its assistance in patrolling that country's airspace. German government spokesman Stephan Cornelius said Thursday, Sept. 11, Berlin took the step "in addition to existing commitments in the Baltic States and Poland."

Today, the Bundeswehr also contributes to protecting the airspace of the Baltic States, where one German Patriot air defense system is deployed, by participating in patrol flights.

The number of Eurofighter fighter jets based at Rostock-Lage airbase and patrolling the skies over Poland will be increased from two to four, according to the German Defense Ministry. In addition, a rapid reaction force unit will serve there not until the end of September, as previously planned, but until December 31, 2025, and this period may be further extended.

At the same time, Cornelius said that Germany will strengthen its support for Ukraine.
