Second Ukrainian Regiment Received M1 Abrams Tanks

The tanks have undergone modernization.

The Ukrainian 425th Assault Regiment "Skala", which became famous during the Kharkiv counteroffensive of 2022, has received American M1 Abrams main battle tanks. The unit received the first vehicles at the beginning of the month, which it announced on its Facebook page, writes The National Interest (translated by Charter97.org).

Before that time, M1 Abrams were only in service with the 47th Mechanized Brigade "Magura". In total, the US has transferred 31 tanks to Ukraine.

The new batch of tanks came from Australia, which last year promised to transfer 49 old M1A1 Abrams. This came after the country began receiving new M1A2 SEPv3s from the US. The delivery was delayed, but the vehicles were serviced and handed over to the Ukrainian army.

Australian tanks have been upgraded with the M1A1 AIM SA: a digital fire control system, thermal imaging equipment and an improved communications system. The engines were adapted to use diesel fuel instead of JP-8 aviation kerosene. The Abrams was also equipped with depleted uranium-free armor.

It is expected that the vehicles will be retrofitted with drone protection and electronic warfare equipment, as most of the Abrams destroyed earlier were hit by drones.

But experts note that problems remain: lack of air and artillery support, shortage of specialists and equipment reduce the effectiveness of the Abrams.

The "Rock" regiment is known for its aggressive tactics. It was the first to receive the M2 Bradley BMP, and also uses M113 armored personnel carriers, M108 SAU and even motorcycle units to break through Russian positions.
