Famous Soviet composer Rodion Shchedrin has died. He was 93 years old. This is reported by the Bolshoi Theater of Russia.
"Rodion Shchedrin is a unique phenomenon and an epoch in the life of world musical culture. His operas, ballets and symphonic works have been performed for many decades with great success on all major stages of the world. Shchedrin's invaluable creative legacy invariably resonates with the public. This is a great tragedy and an irreparable loss for the entire art world," says the obituary published by the theater.
Rodion Shchedrin is one of the most famous composers of the second half of the twentieth century in the post-Soviet space. He is the author of many famous works, including the ballets "Carmen Suite" and "Anna Karenina" and the opera "Not Only Love," as well as symphonies, concertos, choruses and piano works. His music has been performed by the world's leading orchestras, and conductors have included such names as Mstislav Rostropovich, Lorin Maazel, and Mariss Jansons.
In all, Shchedrin composed more than one and a half hundred chamber, choral and symphonic pieces, as well as music in dramatic plays and movies.
Since 1958, Rodion Shchedrin was married to ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, who died in 2015 at the age of 89.
