The US president said this in response to criticism of his decision to send the National Guard to Washington.

US President Donald Trump has said he is "not a dictator" in response to criticism of his decision to send National Guard troops to Washington. Trump's words are reported by NBC News.

"They say: he's a dictator. I'm not a dictator. I'm a person with common sense, and I'm an intelligent person. And when I see what's happening to our cities and I bring in the troops.... Instead of praise, they say, 'You are trying to take over the Republic.' These people are sick,'" Trump said.

He also said the White House "in a sense should wait to put troops in until asked," arguing that otherwise opponents would take credit for the subsequent drop in crime.
