Political Scientist: Lukashenko's Health Situation Is Really Serious
- 25.08.2025, 15:26
It was no accident that the dictator announced the medical examination.
Lukashenko said that he has undergone a full medical examination.
Why did he himself raise this topic and what could it mean in the context of his actual state of health?
About this, Charter97.org spoke with economist and political columnist Dmitry Bolkunts:
- It has been visually apparent over the last several years, especially the last two or three years, that his health is not good. His head was shaking, he couldn't walk, he had surgery, according to various sources - in 2022.
- It's obvious that he has problems: constant shortness of breath, general deterioration of his condition. The fact that he is now speaking publicly about his health means that there are indeed some serious reasons. He has never done so before. In an authoritarian country, a leader will always hide illnesses and demonstrate that he is "healthy and active." But the very fact that Lukashenko has talked about his health suggests that the situation is serious.
It can be assumed that he is receiving reports that officials are discussing his condition behind the scenes. This may be an attempt to dispel rumors and show his entourage, as well as to demonstrate to Putin that he is "healthy and able to work."
I recall that Lukashenko deceived Putin when he ran in the presidential election, although he promised not to do so. So now he will demonstrate with all his might that there is no need to change him. I think this is a signal for the Kremlin politburo as well.
- What are Lukashenko's diseases known today and how dangerous are they for his ability to rule the country?
- Visually it is clear that he has overweight problems, plus diabetes. At about 190 centimeters tall, he weighs about 150 kilograms - that's maximum degree obesity. Which means there are heart problems. You can also see the senile deterioration of his eyesight. Sometimes he has severe swelling in his legs - this indicates problems with the venous system and valves.
He has constant shortness of breath. He previously had spinal problems - a herniated disc or other condition that caused him to have surgery back in the 90s. He also said he had surgery on his knee. He had major abdominal surgery a few years ago. It is not known exactly what was treated - whether it was gout, prostate, or another disease - but the fact remains that there were interventions.
These diseases can be called "age-related," but Lukashenko has a whole complex of them.
As for mental health, there are obvious problems with the perception of reality. He has no "brakes." He has been diagnosed with mosaic psychopathy, and this may even give him a competitive advantage in politics.
For his entourage, this is extremely dangerous: he has no control over emotions, actions, and lacks compassion. For a politician, this turns into cold blood, but for society - into a threat.
His mental disorders manifest themselves in the fact that he gives orders to security forces to beat, kill people, drive them out of the country. He lacks a sense of justice, pity, empathy. These are largely the consequences of complexes and traumas of childhood, which he himself often mentions. Hatred, harshness, desire for revenge - all this is dangerous, because it directly affects his actions and the fate of the whole country.
