What is known about the drone attack on the Novoshakhtyn oil refinery
On the night of August 21, Ukrainian drones attacked the Novoshakhtyn refinery in the Rostov region, after which a large-scale fire broke out at the plant. On August 23, it became known that the fire had spread to a new tank.
Because of the scale of the fire in the town of Krasny Sulin, the water supply was cut off in order to direct it to extinguishing.
Even immediately after the first attack, on August 21, Novoshakhtinsk reduced the pressure in the water supply to fill fire tanks, residents were then warned about the low pressure and urged to understand.
Novoshakhtinsk mayor Sergei Bondarenko acknowledged that firefighting was difficult and advised people to go outside as little as possible, not to open windows at night, to use protective masks and to cover gaps in houses with a damp cloth.
Novoshakhtinsk refinery is the only operating oil refinery in Rostov region.
It is one of the largest suppliers of petroleum products in southern Russia and is involved in supplying the Russian army with fuel and lubricants. The total volume of tanks at the enterprise exceeds 210 thousand cubic meters.
