Famous Belarusian Businessman Alexander Smantser Died

He left Belarus in 2006.

On February 28, 2025, a major Belarusian businessman Alexander Smantser died. It became known about it only now. His death was reported on his page in Facebook by journalist Maksim Berezinsky.

In the 1990s, a significant part of trade with Russia passed through Alexander Smantser. He also used to own a controlling stake in the soccer Minsk Dynamo.

In 2002, a criminal case was brought against Smantser for illegal business activities related to BMZ. Authorities estimated the damage caused at $84 million dollars. Smantser was sentenced to two years in prison. Then the court decisions were reviewed several times.

After his release, the businessman left Belarus. Since 2006, he has never been to his native country.
