The EU will continue to exert active pressure on the Russian military economy, and the next package of sanctions against Moscow should be prepared by September. This was stated by EU diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas after a virtual meeting with the leaders of the union's member states to discuss the outcome of US President Donald Trump's summit with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders in Washington.
"The unity of EU leaders at today's virtual summit was palpable. All are committed to a lasting peace that protects the vital security interests of both Ukraine and Europe. The EU will continue to target Russia's war economy. The next package of sanctions against Moscow should be ready by next month," Callas wrote in X, stressing that these issues will be the focus of the upcoming meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers.
European Council President Antonio Costa held a phone conversation with Zelensky after the online meeting, emphasizing the EU's cohesion and unwavering support for Ukraine. "Immediately after our discussion with the members of the European Council, I contacted President Zielenski. I emphasized the EU's unity and unwavering support for Ukraine, as well as our commitment to keep pressure on Russia," Costa wrote in X. He described the EU's main tasks as stopping the bloodshed, promoting a prisoner exchange and the return of children abducted by Russia. Costa added that the EU will cooperate with the US to provide credible security guarantees for Ukraine.
"We plan to work with President Zelensky and the US to develop the next steps towards a just and lasting peace. We must continue to support the Ukrainian people and advance the process of enlargement. Ukraine's future lies in the prosperity and stability that EU membership provides," the European Council president stressed.
August 18, the White House hosted talks with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a number of European leaders. Trump later said that the meeting discussed, among other things, security guarantees for Ukraine, which the allies are ready to provide to Kiev.
