NYT: Europe Ready To Confront 'second Yalta'

Making decisions behind the backs of allies is unacceptable.

Ahead of US President Donald Trump and Putin meeting in Alaska, fears are growing that Ukraine's fate may be decided without its participation - similar to the 1945 Yalta Conference, when the US, Britain and The New York Times (translated by Charter97.org).

Trump reportedly plans to discuss a "land swap" in Ukraine with Putin. In Europe, and especially in Eastern Europe, this raises painful historical parallels. "Yalta is a symbol that great powers can sell us out behind closed doors," experts say.

Historians recall that, unlike the allied Stalin in 1945, today's Russia is waging a war of aggression and demanding the transfer of territories it does not control.

Brussels and European capitals emphasize: there will be no repeat of "Yalta." The EU intends to push for any negotiations on Ukraine's future to be conducted with its direct participation. "Ukraine is not a bargaining chip," diplomats say, warning that any attempts to bypass Kiev will only intensify confrontation and undermine European security.

European leaders plan to discuss the upcoming summit with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance in a virtual meeting to forge a common position and prevent decisions made behind the backs of allies.
