US Imposes Duties Against Brazil Over BRICS And The "tropical Trump" Affair

The duties will reach a total of 50%.

The United States has imposed an additional duty of 40% on products from Brazil, according to the White House website.

"Goods produced in Brazil and imported into the customs territory of the United States are subject, by law, to an additional ad valorem duty of 40%," the statement said. The ad valorem duty, "by value," is set on the customs value of the goods, so it does not have a fixed amount.

Reuters specifies that the amount of duties for Brazil would thus be 50%. The tariff in this amount Washington threatened to impose from August 1, although back on April 2, first announcing duties against this country, US President Donald Trump talked about a rate of only 10%. The current rate is one of the highest among those announced by the Republican.

As noted by Reuters, the tariff war with Brazil is not due to economic (there is no trade deficit, as in the case of other countries), but to political reasons. It is about the persecution in the country of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was called "tropical Trump". The real Trump called for the politician to be left "alone". In addition, the measures are linked to the country's membership in BRICS.

The current president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has repeatedly criticized the American leader. In June, for example, he noted that the president of a country like the United States. "should watch what he says, think about what he says, should be less on the Internet and more a head of state, think more about free trade, multilateralism," rather than chasing "damn headlines" in the media and popularity.

Lula da Silva said Brazil has had a president with similar characteristics and he was "least interested in the truth and the needs of the country" - he was probably referring specifically to Bolsonaro.

Talking about the country's reaction to Trump's promised duties, Lula da Silva noted that "if the United States doesn't want to buy something from us, we will look for someone who will."
