The U.S. president announced the duties.
President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will impose a 25% export duty on India from August 1. He wrote this in a Truth Social.
The American leader said that over the years, the US has done "relatively little business with India because their tariffs are too high, ...> and they have the toughest and nasty non-monetary trade barriers of any country."
Trump said India bought "most of its military equipment from Russia and are the largest buyer of Russian energy along with China at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine."
"Therefore, India will pay a tariff of 25% plus a penalty for the above, effective August 1," Trump wrote.
He gave no other details about the penalty for India.
