It has to do with high-level daily advice.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has played a key role in shaping United States President Donald Trump's tougher foreign policy line toward Russia, China and Iran.

This is according to Financial Times, citing an unnamed friend and former aide to Rubio.

The publication notes that as senator, Rubio was an ardent supporter of American aid abroad and American diplomacy as a force for good in the world. He emphasized the need to stand up to dictators and support dissidents who oppose authoritarian regimes.

As secretary of state, however, he supports the views of Trump, who is committed to isolationism and cutting foreign aid.

The media interlocutor, however, said Rubio has not abandoned his values, but instead has championed them, which has influenced Trump to take a tougher stance on countries such as China, Iran, Russia and Venezuela.

"In terms of China, Russia, Ukraine and Iran, you see a reinvigorated American foreign policy and a reaffirmation of America's role in the world," the interviewee told the FT.

He said this is due to "the high-level advice that the minister provides to the president and the rest of the administration on a daily basis."
