Russia's ambassador to North Korea Alexander Matsegora has died. He was 70 years old.
"We express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. It indicated that Matsegora made "a significant contribution to the establishment and deepening of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and the DPRK."
He had worked in this position since 2014. Prior to that, he worked in the central apparatus of the Russian Foreign Ministry as deputy director of the First Department of Asia.
His diplomatic career is largely connected with North Korea. Immediately after graduating from MGIMO, he worked in the Soviet trade mission in the DPRK, later engaged in other joint Soviet-North Korean projects. In 2006-2011, he was Minister Counselor at the Russian Embassy in the DPRK.
