- 4.12.2025, 18:49
The issue will be discussed by the ministers of the three countries.
Baltic presidents met at the Rīga Castle on December 4 to discuss regional security issues, further steps to strengthen energy security, current European Union problems, and support for Ukraine. This is reported by lsm.lv.
Among other things, the Baltic leaders discussed the possibility of making a joint decision on dismantling rails on the border with Russia and Belarus.
"If we are going to do it, we will do it together," said Estonian President Alar Karis, referring to the possibility of dismantling the railroad.
He said the issue has been referred to ministers for further discussion.
In turn, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Baltic States and Poland on the issue of creating an "Eastern Defensive Border." He suggested that the issue be referred to the European Commission for consideration.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics, in turn, noted that the issue is not only about railroads, but also about measures to limit mobility: "And there are several elements here, not only this one."
It should be noted that after a record influx of smuggled balloons from Belarus, Lithuania is not considering an immediate closure of the border, but such an option remains on the agenda.
