The athlete explained her decision.
Famous Russian tennis player Anastasia Potapova has decided not to represent her native country at international tournaments. The 24-year-old Saratov native, who ranks 51st in the world rankings, will play under the Austrian flag from the new season.
Potapova herself wrote about it in her Telegram channel. The athlete, who has won six titles in her career - three each in singles and doubles - and earned over five million dollars in prize money, added that she was excited to represent the new country.
"I am happy to announce that my application for citizenship has been approved by the Austrian government. Austria is a place I love, it is incredibly welcoming, I feel at home there. I love Vienna and I look forward to making it my second home. I am therefore proud to announce that from 2026 I will represent my new homeland, Austria, in my professional tennis career," Potapova said.
