Because of new signals from Moscow.
European leaders held an urgent conversation on Ukraine after the Kremlin said it intended to strengthen its negotiating position. This came after accusations of an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on Putin's residence.
The Vloomberg wrote about it.
The conversation was attended by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The participants discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine and strengthening the security of allied states.
In particular, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said that work on credible security guarantees for Ukraine continues unabated. According to him, the countries of the so-called "Coalition of the willing" are planning a new meeting as early as next week.
The discussions in Europe took place against the background of active diplomacy in recent days. Thus, on December 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited US President Donald Trump's residence in Florida, after which Trump declared "significant progress" in resolving the war in Ukraine.
At the same time, the Kremlin shows no real desire to end the war in Ukraine. Moreover, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has declared his intention to seize new territories in Ukraine, and the Russian Foreign Ministry has threatened to respond to a fictitious drone attack.
