The animals guarded the baby all night long.

In the Indian city of Nawadwip, a pack of stray dogs guarded an abandoned newborn baby boy overnight until he was discovered and rescued by locals, writes The Times of India.

Overnight, residents heard a baby crying, but most thought the cries were coming from a neighboring house. It was only at dawn that Radha Bhowmick, who was on her way to the street toilet, found the infant surrounded by dogs. The animals had not harmed the child - rather, they appeared to be protecting him from possible dangers.

"These dogs, which we often chase away, did what many people would not have done. They kept the baby alive," noted Bhowmick.

Afterward, the woman immediately took the infant to the hospital. Doctors confirmed that the newborn had no external injuries - only traces of labor blood on his head. The newborn's condition is stable and he was transferred to the district hospital for further observation.

Police launched an investigation, suspecting that the baby was abandoned by someone in the neighborhood shortly after delivery. Together with the Childline organization, authorities are deciding on long-term custody of the boy.
