Disagreements are possible.
During today's meeting in Florida, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and US President Donald Trump will face serious disagreements on key points of the peace plan.
The Reuters reports.
The agency recalled that on the night of Saturday, December 27, Russia attacked Ukraine with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. Zelensky called it Moscow's response to the U.S.-mediated peace talks.
The Ukrainian president told reporters that during his meeting with Trump, he plans to discuss the fate of Donbass, as well as the future of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and other topics.
Moscow has repeatedly demanded that Ukraine give up all of Donbass, including territories still under the control of the Defense Forces. And Russian officials have also objected to other parts of the latest proposal.
As Reuters notes, this raises doubts about whether Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will accept the results of the talks in Florida.
Zelensky earlier said he hopes to soften the U.S. proposal for a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbass. Otherwise, the Ukrainian leader said, the 20-point peace plan - the result of long negotiations - should be put to a referendum.
The meeting between Zelensky and Trump in Florida comes after a long diplomatic effort. European allies have at times been on the sidelines, stepping up efforts to define the contours of post-war security guarantees for Kiev that would be backed by the United States.
Kiev and Washington have agreed on many issues, with a 20-point plan 90% ready. However, the territorial issue remains unresolved.
Zelensky, whose previous meetings with Trump have not always gone smoothly, shares European leaders' fears that Trump could betray Ukraine, leaving European states to foot the bill for supporting the war-ravaged country.
Reuters also points out that Putin said on Dec. 19 that a peace deal should be based on the conditions he set out for 2024: the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from all territories in Donbass, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions, and Ukraine's refusal to join NATO.
Ukrainian officials and European leaders have warned that if Russia succeeds on Ukraine, it could attack Alliance members in the future.
