ISW: Putin Sees Belarus As A Springboard For Attacks And Military Scenarios

  • 27.12.2025, 20:32

Lukashenko is a threat to regional security.

Belarus continues to serve as a springboard for Russian strikes on Ukraine and potential attacks on NATO. This is confirmed by recent drone strikes on the railroad infrastructure of western regions of Ukraine.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

-Russia is actively developing military infrastructure in Belarus, using it to support aggression against Ukraine and create conditions for possible future military scenarios against NATO," ISW analysts said.

Recent reports indicate that Russian Shahed drones are attacking railroad facilities in western Ukraine, launched from the Belarusian direction to bypass Ukrainian drone interception systems.

On December 26, a strike hit the Kovel railway station in Volyn region, damaging a locomotive, a freight car and a repair depot.

Recently, drones destroyed a freight train near Korosten in Zhytomyr region, derailing a freight and passenger train.

Electronic warfare expert Sergey "Flash" Beskrestnov said the drone operator could have been in Belarus, using FPV control to attack moving targets.

The ISW analysts emphasize that Belarus has effectively become a staging ground for Russian military operations, from the 2022 full-scale invasion to the current attacks.

Moscow plans to further develop military infrastructure in Belarus, providing support for the war against Ukraine and setting the stage for strikes against NATO countries.

ISW analysts and REB experts note that Shahed drones "are being launched not only from Russia, but also remotely from Belarus, increasing risks to railroad cargo and passengers.

This dynamic demonstrates Belarus' growing role in the Kremlin's military plans and threat to regional security.
